When clients first enter my treatment room, they often come with a familiar story: a chronic ache that medicine can't explain, a persistent fatigue that sleep doesn't fix, or a feeling of being "stuck" that talk therapy hasn't shifted. They're seeking something beyond conventional approaches—they're seeking balance. This is where Polarity Therapy begins.
More Than Just Touch
Many assume Polarity Therapy is simply another form of bodywork, but from my therapist's chair, it's fundamentally different. While massage focuses on muscles and fascia, Polarity concerns itself with the energy field—the living matrix that animates the body. I often explain to clients that we're working not just on the body, but through it.
The foundation rests on Dr. Randolph Stone's insight that health manifests as the free flow of life energy (prana or chi), while disease represents stagnation or blockage. My role isn't to "fix" clients, but to facilitate their own innate capacity for rebalancing.
The Map of Energy
Central to my practice are the five elements—Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth—each corresponding to different aspects of being:
Ether relates to spaciousness and receptivity (throat area) · Air governs movement and thought (chest and lungs) · Fire transforms and empowers (solar plexus) · Water flows and connects (pelvic region) · Earth grounds and stabilises (legs and feet)
When a client presents with anxiety (excessive Air), I might focus on Earth and Water elements to provide grounding. When someone feels stagnant (excessive Earth), I'll work with Air and Fire to encourage movement and transformation.
The Language of the Body
The most profound aspect of Polarity from a therapeutic standpoint is learning to "listen" with my hands. There's a distinct vocabulary in the energy field:
Whirling currents indicate healthy, flowing energy · Pulsations often signal the release of a blockage · Heat patterns reveal areas of congestion · Cold areas suggest depletion · Tingling vibrations frequently accompany energy movement
I recall working with a client who had persistent shoulder pain. Structural approaches had failed. During our session, my hands detected not congestion in the shoulder itself, but a disrupted energy flow originating from the opposite hip—a pattern of crossed energy currents. By rebalancing these pathways, the shoulder pain resolved. The body had been compensating for an energy imbalance, not a structural one.
The Art of Facilitation
A Polarity session is a collaborative dance. I apply light touch, gentle rocking, or sometimes no physical contact at all, working in the energy field just above the body. The techniques include:
Polarised touch (one hand attracting, the other repelling energy) · Circuit balancing (connecting energy points to complete circuits) · Rocking to release structural and energetic holding patterns · Energy tracing along the body's natural energy pathways
The true magic happens in the space between us—the therapeutic relationship becomes a container for transformation. I'm not "giving" energy but facilitating the client's own flow. When resistance melts and energy begins moving freely, there's often a palpable shift in the room—a deep sigh, a release of tension, or sometimes tears that aren't sad but rather the physical expression of energy being liberated.
Witnessing Transformation
The most rewarding aspect of practicing Polarity Therapy is witnessing clients rediscover their vitality. One client described it as "remembering how to be in my body again." Another said, "It feels like coming home."
From my perspective as a therapist, Polarity offers something unique: it addresses the whole human being without requiring the client to verbally analyse their experience. The work happens in the silent language of energy, often accessing places that words cannot reach.
The Living Practice
What keeps me passionate after years of practice is that Polarity Therapy continues to evolve—both as a field and within each session. No two clients have the same energy configuration, and no single session repeats itself. The work keeps me humble, curious, and constantly learning—from my clients, from the energy itself, and from the silent wisdom of the body that knows exactly what it needs to return to balance.
In a world that often approaches health from fragmentation—specialising in parts rather than wholes—Polarity Therapy remains a practice that honors the profound intelligence of the complete human being. It's not something I do to people, but something we explore together in that sacred space where energy remembers its natural state of harmonious flow.
